1. Hanoi and Northern Vietnam Hanoi - the capital of the country, is a small and charming city with tree-lined boulevards, French colonial architecture and picturesque lakes. A walk through the Old Quarter, and a water-puppet show must not be missed while at Hanoi. A few hours' drive from Hanoi is Halong Bay - a World Heritage site. The bay has nearly two thousand islands made of limestone and schist. One can enjoy a day cruise or even stay overnight on board a junk. North-west of Hanoi is the hill-station of Sapa, famous for its scenic setting in view of the Fan Si Pan mountain, and for its many hill-tribes. One can get to Sapa by road, or by taking the Victoria Sapa train from Hanoi.
2. Central Vietnam As many as four World Heritage sites are located in Central Vietnam - the Imperial City at Hue, the Cham capital city of My Son, the old quarter of Hoi An and the Phong Nha Cave. In addition, Central Vietnam has excellent beaches at Danang and Nha Trang, and the popular hill station of Dalat.
3. Saigon Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam, and a bustling centre of activity. Among the places to visit are the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Ben Tranh market. The nearby Cu Chi tunnels - a complex of 200km of tunnels used by the Viet Minh and the Viet Cong as living quarters, storage and hospitals.
4. Mekong Delta This fertile delta provides the Vietnamese with a surplus of its staple - rice. Verdant countryside criss-crossed by the river and its canals, floating markets and cruises on the river make for a very interesting side trip to this region. |
