Cycling combine with elephant ride
Day 1: Full Itinerary
We meet at hotel and transfer drive Lao Spirit Resort on a small dirt road that guides us out into the counrtyside. The first stop we have is at Wat Pa Phon Phao, a forest temple famous for the teachings of Ajahn Saisamut. When he died in 1992, his funeral was the largest that Laos had seen in decades. It's Santi Chedi (Peace Pagoda) was built in 1988. This large yellow stupa contains three inside levels plus an outside terrace with a view of the surrounding plains. The inside walls are painted with many Buddhist stories and moral admonitions. After another kilometer we will arrive in Ban Panom. This village, populated by Thai Lue (a tribe with its origins in Southern China), is well known for cotton and silk hand-weaving. Here we have the opportunity to check out how to make the traditional Lao Cotton on a weaving loom. The dirt road will bring us through teakwood plantations and rice fields up the Nam Khan valley. We pass the tomb of Henry Mouhot, the French explorer who showed Angkor Wat to the world. Henry Mouhot perished of malaria in1861, and the French erected a tomb over his grave six years later. His engraved tomb was found by foreign aid staff in 1990. We will continue our bike adventure through rice paddies and dense forest before we arrive in our Elephant camp and the Lao Spirit Resort. This wonderful place located 15 km from Luang Prabang along the Nam Khan River. The views here are astonishing. We cross the river over to the elephant camp where we start our elephant ride. The elephant trail goes through jungle, past teak plantations and rice paddies, and gives wonderful views of the river valley and the mountains. After approx. 1-1,5 hour ride we will reach the Tad Sae Waterfall, where crystal clear waters cascade over multilevel limestone formations, forming pools surrounded by tropical trees and plants. An ideal place for swimming and relaxing, this beautiful place cannot be reached by road. Here we have lunch before a motorboat will bring us back to the Lao Spirit Resort. After our elephant riding experience and boat trip down stream, we get back on our mountain bikes and ride back to Luang Prabang. This will take about 2 hours and goes 5 km on dirt road and 15 km on good road. Tour ends around 17.00pm.
