Laos Weather, Climate & Geography

The mighty Mekong in the west and the Annamite Mountains in the east offer natural borders with Thailand and Vietnam respectively, while Laos also shares borders with China in the north, Myanmar in the northwest and Cambodia in the south. With over half of this landlocked country's 236,800sqkm densely forested, and 70% of it mountainous, it is hardly surprising that a profusion of rare flora and over 1,200 species of wildlife finds a home beneath its tropical canopy.

Current entry formalities

visa150 Visa needed, requiring passport and two two-inch photos, valid for one month, cost US$ 30 and taking approx. 3 days to process. Visa on arrival also available at Friendship Bridge, Vientiane and Luang Prabang airports as well as Chong Mek. (Entry formalities are likely to be relaxed further as tourism expands, so check with the nearest Lao embassy for latest information).

LAOS OVERVIEW

Laos history is one of colonization and occupation. Some of the earliest conquerors were the mighty Khmer Empire. The nation of’ Lane Xang’, or the Land of a Million Elephants was born with Luang Prabang as its capital. Khmer power yielded to that of the neighboring Thais until towards the end of the 19th century the Thais were forced to give up large parts of their territory to France. Lan Xang was renamed Laos and became part of French Indochina.
