Where and What to Eat in Hoi An
If it's location you are after in a dining out location then Hoi An's many riverside restaurants will be just the (meal) ticket for you. Floating or land based, they exude effortless class and are surprisingly friendly places in a country where curtness sometimes is the byword in service. As in most travel destinations go with the flow and dine where the people are and you'll discover culinary wonders for reasonable prices. Han Huyen floating restaurantHan Huyen seems to be most people's automatic destination when it comes to eating out in Hoi An and for a set up that looks suspiciously like a tourist trap it seems to deliver surprisingly well. You can order 'international' food here but it's best - like in so many other Southeast Asian locations - to stick with local dishes and in this case traditional Vietnamese fare with a good view on the old town.
The Red BridgeNew, and very stylish restaurant on the banks of the Hoi An River about two kilometres from the old town (free shuttle boat available). The Red Bridge specialises in modern Vietnamese cuisines and dishes, that are beautifully presented, expertly prepared and cooked to order every time. The Red Bridge also runs a daily Vietnamese cooking tour that includes a market walkabout, a boat trip, demonstration and lunch. Mango RoomsMango Rooms is a popular and stylish, restaurant that features an excellent fusion of contemporary Vietnamese cuisine with international influences. The attached bar and lounge is a great place to enjoy reasonably priced drinks either inside while chilling out on the assorted lounges and cushions, or outside on the dual terraces, out front and back on Nguyen Thai Hoc and Bach Dang - the latter affording soothing river views. River LoungeA big hit with visitors and somewhat of a centre for local information, River Lounge, a two-storey international restaurant serves up excellent fare at reasonable prices. Upstairs, old-style movies are occasionally shown and the River Lounge is a font of innovative and creative ideas with, of course, a great view out over the river.
Cargo ClubTraditional Hoi An specialities and other Vietnamese favourites served in style at the classic Cargo Club in the heart of the ancient town. The venue is housed in a beautiful old shop-house and is large enough to accommodate sizeable groups. Reserve a table on the balcony overlooking the river. The Cargo Club is also home to Ms. Vy's cooking school. Hoi An Hai SanAn intimate and excellent riverside restaurant with a Swedish chef, Hoi An Hai San serves up well-balanced European (Mediterranean) and Vietnamese dishes in style. Also specialises in Scandinavian tid bits.
Brother's CaféA former ice factory, Brother's Café serves up fine Vietnamese cuisine served in style in beautiful surroundings and its lush, tropical gardens. Brother's Café offers an extensive menu featuring local delicacies including Cao Lau and White Rose, plus a wide range of specialities from all over Vietnam. Not cheap. Tam Tam CaféSuperb French, Mediterranean and international cuisine served in some style in a beautifully converted old shop-house in the centre of town.
